The City of Mill Valley is pleased to welcome applications for Maintenance Worker II - Parks. 

As a Maintenance Worker II in our Parks Division, you will play a hands-on role in keeping Mill Valley’s beautiful outdoor spaces safe, clean, and welcoming for the community. Working under general supervision, you will take on a variety of skilled tasks, including pruning trees, mowing lawns, maintaining park structures, and supporting restoration efforts.

Your daily work may take you from trail maintenance in the scenic foothills of Mt. Tamalpais to creek restoration projects along the historic Corte Madera Creek to caring for athletic fields with stunning views of Richardson Bay. This is active, outdoor work that keeps you moving and involves bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and navigating varied terrain across both developed parks and natural open spaces.

Examples of essential duties and responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

  • Regularly inspects and addresses assigned park and playground facilities, fields, and medians for safety, repair, clean-up, maintenance, replacement, or other needs. 
  • Regularly mows, weeds, trims, edges, aerates, gardens, and otherwise caretakes fields, trees, and landscapes. 
  • Frequently plants, transplants, fertilizes, cultivates, and waters fields, trees, medians, and other landscaped areas. 
  • Frequently trims, cuts, shapes, and prunes shrubs and trees with tools. 
  • Maintains, cleans, repairs, and constructs/installs park structures including but not limited to playground equipment, fences, railings, steps, lanes, paths, water fountains, irrigation, and related features. 
  • Performs general grounds maintenance including but not limited to raking, sweeping, spraying, blowing, and picking up organic materials, debris, and trash. 
  • Ensures personal safety and that of the team while working in a variety of conditions with a wide assortment of equipment and functions. 
  • Repairs and cleans vandalism to parks facilities. 
  • Picks up litter and trash in parks, landscapes, medians, and other areas. 
  • Properly cares for, maintains, and safely stores equipment such as hand tools, power tools, mowing equipment, etc.
  • Frequently works in/among vehicular traffic to perform maintenance and other activities in the City medians, storm drains, and sidewalks. 
  • Assist with pest control operations utilizing the City's Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
  • Assists with storm preparation, storm clean up, and other public safety needs.  
  • Installs, adjusts, repairs, and maintains sprinkler and irrigation systems, and other related plumbing. 
  • Operates a variety of mowers, edgers, chainsaws, and other specialized equipment. 
  • Operates trenchers, dump trucks, backhoes and loaders, and other tractor attachments. 
  • Occasionally responds to emergencies from on-call status. 
  • Occasionally participates in emergency Public Works repairs and maintenance including working collaboratively with other Divisions (Streets, Sewers, etc.) or Departments (SASM, Arts & Recreation, etc.).

Ideal Candidate

The person who will excel in this position is responsible, safety-conscious, and brings a positive attitude to hands-on, outdoor work. They should enjoy working with their hands and contributing to the care and maintenance of parks, trails, and landscaped areas.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and at least three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance or gardening involving the care of flowers, ornamental shrubs, and trees. Candidates must also be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, lifting, stooping, pushing, and pulling in varied terrain and weather conditions.

Additional skills such as pruning and trimming, irrigation repair, and basic carpentry or masonry work are highly valued.
